Not that long ago, retirement was a relatively simple matter. People worked for the same company for most of their working life. These companies had pension plans in place that would provide their employees a lifetime income after retirement. In recent years, this benefit has become a rarity. Due to the increasing life expectancy of retirees, most companies have discontinued their retirement plan in favor of 401 K’s to avoid a financial risk of an ever growing pension liability. In effect, the responsibility for retirement income that will allow you to live out the rest of your days with dignity has been shifted from the employer to the employee.
Simply stated, it is up to each of us to plan for our retirement.
